Taking Meaningful Steps

In 2016, we established goals to reduce energy and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by December 31, 2020. The goals of a 5% reduction in energy and a 10% reduction in GHGs per normalized production of metal packaging were baselined on our 2015 performance.??

We will continue to report on these 2020 goals based on the metal packaging company portfolio (or any other non-metal packaging divisions owned in 2015) for the duration of these goals. Our data excludes the Transit Packaging Division (Signode), which we acquired in 2018, and the glass plant built in Vichisa, Mexico in 2017. It is also worth noting that data from other areas of our Company, such as the Promotional Packaging and Superior Multi-Packaging Limited business units, is included in our overall energy and emissions data, although they do not contribute to our normalized production. Reducing GHG Emissions

Our goal of reducing GHG emissions by 10% per billion standard units of production includes Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. Scope 1 emissions result from direct usage of thermal energy in our facilities while Scope 2 emissions result mainly from the electricity we purchase.
Through continuous improvements in our operations, equipment and energy efficiency, we surpassed our target as of December 31, 2019. We have also lowered our absolute emissions by 1.1% even as we expanded production by 13.9%, demonstrating our ability to serve customers with greater capacity while still operating responsibly.?

Decreasing Energy Consumption

We set a goal of reducing energy consumption by 5% per billion standard units of production. Our metal packaging plants surpassed that goal as of December 31, 2019, lowering energy usage by 5.1%.?

Across the company, we continue working to reduce our energy consumption, which is impacted by our glass packaging facilities in Mexico. The direct emissions from these facilities are significantly higher than those from our metal plants due to the energy-intensive process of converting sand to glass.?
